E. Philip Horwitz Fellowship

Fellowship

Eichrom Technologies, LLC is pleased to announce the E. Philip Horwitz Fellowship to support graduate research in separation science, particularly in applications related to radionuclide purification, nuclear medicine, the nuclear fuel cycle, and f-element separations.

The fellowship is intended to provide support for one semester, including stipend, travel, and registration fees for related conferences. Additionally, successful applicants are encouraged to join Eichrom scientists in independent research projects that can contribute to their thesis or advanced degree.

The first Horwitz Fellow will be chosen from applications received by August 31, 2025, with the award meant to support the Fellow during 2026.

Phil Horwitz

Dr. E. Philip Horwitz (Phil), longtime Argonne National Laboratory scientist and founder of Eichrom Technologies, passed away on December 28, 2024, at the age of 94. A self-proclaimed “simple separation scientist” he made out-sized contributions to many fields, including solvent extraction, extraction chromatography, radioanalytical chemistry, nuclear medicine, and radioisotope purification. During a scientific career spanning more than 60 years, he helped to analyze the lunar surface, searched for new elements, worked to clean up legacy nuclear wastes, revolutionized the analytical methods for radionuclides, and inspired chemistries for the efficient purification of radioisotopes used to diagnose and treat diseases.  Phil’s accomplishments include 45 patents granted, 180 scientific articles authored, and multiple international awards for scientific excellence received, including the American Chemical Society, Glenn T. Seaborg Award for Nuclear Chemistry, the founders award from the Radiobioassay and Radiochemical Measurements Conference, and the Becquerel Medal from the Royal Society of Chemistry. Phil’s friends and colleagues at Eichrom Technologies wish to honor his memory through the establishment of the Horwitz Fellowship Program to support graduate research in the field of separation science.

Dr. E. Philip Horwitz (Phil)

Eichrom Technologies, LLC

Eichrom Technologies, founded by Phil Horwitz in 1990 to commercialize extraction chromatographic resins developed while at Argnonne National Laboratory, is a world leader in radioanalytical chemistry and the gold standard global supplier of extraction chromatography, analytical grade ion exchange resins, and solid phase extraction media.  Eichrom operates a full analytical radiochemistry laboratory in Lisle, IL, just west of Chicago, to support quality control, methods and materials development, customer support, and basic research.

Through the Nuclear Power Outfitters brand, Eichrom also designs and manufactures radiation shielding and protection equipment for customers world-wide in the fields of commercial and military nuclear power generation and research reactors, nuclear pharmacies, and other industries that utilize radioactive materials.

For many years Eichrom has played a prominent role in environmental radiochemistry, radiobioassay, and geochemistry.  Recently we have formed research and supply partnerships with leading companies in the field of nuclear medicine to jointly improve the radiochemistry utilized in the production of radioisotopes and the purification of radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine applications.
