82Rb is an emerging PET isotope for the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. The short-lived 82Rb (t1/2 = 1.2575 minutes) is directly injected from a generator containing 82Sr immobilized on a column of hydrous stannic oxide. 82Sr itself, is produced by proton irradiation of natural Rb targets. Following dissolution of the irradiated Rb target (up to 50 grams) in HNO3, the separation of 82Sr is achieved using a column of Sr Resin. After recovering the 82Sr in 0.05-0.20M HNO3, a small column of strong acid cation exchange resin is used to concentrate the Sr and remove any 1-octanol or crown ether that may have leached from the Sr Resin.[1]
